Do You Need a Live Stream for Your Wedding? An Honest Guide

When a wedding live stream is worth its cost, and what to ask so it does not drop out at the worst possible moment.

Evening coverage of a wedding reception

Live streaming has gone from luxury to near-standard request in the region, for a simple reason: families are spread across Jordan, the Gulf, Europe and North America, and not everyone can travel. But it is not right for every wedding. Here are the criteria.

When it is worth the cost

  • You have immediate family who cannot travel — parents or grandparents in particular.
  • The wedding is in a different country from most of the family (a Dubai wedding with family in Jordan, for instance).
  • There are specific moments you want absent guests to witness: the ceremony, the zaffeh, the speeches.
  • The venue is large and you also want the feed on in-house screens.

When it is not worth it

If nearly everyone who matters is already in the room, that budget is better spent on an extra camera, a crane, or aerial coverage. A stream serves the people who are absent; it does not improve the final film.

The questions that protect your stream

Where does the audio come from?

This is what ruins streams most often. Audio must be taken directly from the venue's sound desk, not a camera mic. A camera mic in a wedding hall produces distorted, unintelligible sound.

What is the backup connection?

Venue Wi-Fi is the most common point of failure, especially once hundreds of guests connect to it at once. A professional crew brings an independent cellular connection as a backup and tests bandwidth on site before the day, not on it.

How many cameras are in the stream?

A single locked-off camera becomes tedious to watch after ten minutes. Two cameras with live switching are enough for a decent experience; three feel close to broadcast.

Is the link private?

The stream should be on an unlisted link, password-protected where possible. Also ask whether the full recording is delivered to you afterwards.

A good stream goes unnoticed. A bad one is all the family will remember.
